ViaMichelin Navigation devices feature a latest generation SiRF Star III GPS receiver which works even in unfavourable reception conditions.
When you use a ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 for the first time, it is recommended that you move to a relatively open place in order to achieve the best possible reception. The first initialisation of the device can take several minutes depending on the GPS's location and satellite signal reception quality.
The time taken by the GPS to acquire this information varies according to the time which has elapsed between two uses of the device:
Your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 has not been switched on for over 24 hours (cold start): in this case, the satellite signal acquisition time can be fairly long (10-15 minutes), and the message Detecting satellites. This can take several minutes is displayed on the navigation screen.
Your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 has not been switched on for over 4 hours (warm start): GPS reception can then take a few minutes (5 minutes) and the message Acquiring satellite signals is displayed on the navigation screen.
You switch your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 back on when you switched it off a few minutes ago (hot start): satellite reception is practically instantaneous and navigation can resume.
The GPS acquisition time can also vary according to location and surrounding environment:
- Heat-reflective windscreens: if your vehicle is equipped with a heat-reflective windscreen, GPS reception may well be slower. - Car park / tunnel / building: satellite signals do not pass through walls. You will, therefore, be unable to receive any GPS signal if your device is in a building, car park, tunnel, etc. - Urban canyons: in towns with tall buildings, narrow streets or numerous trees, reception will be slower. Move to a clear place to improve reception. - Climatic conditions: in bad weather (heavy snow, etc.), it is possible that GPS reception may take a little more time.
To check your GPS reception, or to check its initialisation, we suggest that, from the Main Menu , you click on Options > Navigation > GPS to display the GPS Screen :
The green V indicates that the GPS is activated.
SAT: x indicates the number of satellites used for position calculation.
Detect. SAT / Rcpt SAT indicates whether satellites are being detected or reception is established.
The vertical bars indicate the satellites detected: - grey: the device is receiving the signals from the satellite indicated but is not using them to determine position (beginning of reception, signal not powerful enough, etc.). - green: the device is using the signals from the satellite indicated for the calculation of the coordinates.
The numbers situated under the vertical bars indicate the American satellite number.
The coordinates: longitude and latitude determined by the system as soon as a geolocation has been determined.
The direction arrow: indicates the direction taken between 2 location calculations by the GPS.
When the screen displays the coordinates (latitude + longitude), it means that the GPS is initialised can be used by the navigation system.
If, when you switch on your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970, there is no SD card inserted in the device, the following icon (Figure 1) is displayed on the screen:
Figure 1
This screen will remain until the SD card supplied with your ViaMichelin Navigation X-960 has been inserted. The SD card must be inserted in order for you to install and use the software on your device.
For more information, please refer to the FAQ: How do I install the SD card on the ViaMichelin Navigation X-970?
Do Not Remove
When you connect your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 to your computer, the following icon (Figure 2) will be displayed on your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 screen. This icon means that you should not remove the SD card from your device as long as it is connected to your computer, as doing so would result in a loss of data.
First of all, ensure that your have installed the software on your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 using the SD card supplied with your device. For more information on this procedure, please refer to: How do I install the software from the SD card?

The screen then displays either the map with the location indicator centred on the place designated by the coordinates (Figure 6), or the reminder of choices screen in order to work out a route (Figure 7) according to the search carried out.
In the first case, you can then click on the or to designate the place at the centre of the location indicator as the departure or arrival point or to save it in your personal saved items or, in the second case, click on Confirm to start the calculation of the route.
Remark :
1) If the screen displays the The place chosen must be less than 25km from a road message (Figure 8), this can be for several reasons:
Figure 8
- The place is indeed more than 25 km from a road known by the navigation system. - No coordinate has been entered. - Coordinates have been entered but without the indications < N > (North) or < S > (South) and / or < E > (East) or < O > (West). - The longitude and latitude coordinates were inverted when they were entered.
2) The coordinates used by ViaMichelin are expressed in degrees, minutes and hundredths of a minute. However, geographic coordinates are often given in sexagesimal degrees, that is, in degrees, minutes and seconds. However, GPSs prefer the decimal system on account of its greater accuracy. It is therefore necessary to convert sexagesimal degrees into decimal degrees.
ViaMichelin Navigation software programs offer routes designed for the "general public". Currently, our mapping databases do not enable us to offer a service specifically to road hauliers, given the specific considerations that need to be taken for drivers of HGV vehicles (dimensions, tonnage, load contents, working hours, etc).
The ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 is delivered with a special mount, suitable for the majority of car windscreens, together with a power cable suitable for a very large number of cigarette lighter sockets. If your PC fails to detect your DVD-ROM once it is installed in the PC drive, please first ensure that the drive is not restricted to the CD-ROM format. Drives capable of reading DVDs usually feature the logo below:
We recommend that you install your ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 software on a PC equipped with the following specifications -
a Pentium® microprocessor (200Mhz or higher)
Minimum of 128 Mb of RAM, with 4Gb (Country version) or 6Gb (European version) capacity on the hard disk
DVD-ROM drive
Microsoft Windows® 2000, XP (32bits) or Vista (32 bits) operating system
Internet connection to activate the DVD-ROM and download POIs or patches
Please note also that ViaMichelin Navigation X-970 installation software is not compatible with Macintosh systems.
If your equipment meets this criteria but the DVD-ROM still fails to start or a CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) error message interrupts or blocks the installation procedure, we recommend that you carry out the following procedure:
1. Eject the DVD-ROM and check for dust or scratches
2. Close all open applications on the PC
3. Empty the temporary Windows files directory (< TEMP > directory).
4. Empty the temporary Internet files directory
5. Empty the PC desktop bin
6. Deactivate - for the duration of the installation process - any anti-virus software installed on your PC
7. Check that there is sufficient free space on your PC hard drive to copy the software (4Gb for a Country version or 6Gb for a European version)
8. Create a temporary directory on your PC hard drive (e.g. "ViaMichelin" on the C: disk)
9. Open the DVD-ROM with Windows Explorer (if you click on My Computer, you will not be able to access the contents of the folder) and copy/paste to the previously created temporary directory
10. Then click on < Setup.exe >
11. You can then access the first standard installation window
12. Once installation is complete, you can delete the temporary folder and its contents
If, despite everything, the DVD-ROM cannot be read or, when copying or installing the DVD-ROM, a new CRC error message appears, we recommend that you contact your retailer's After-Sales Service to exchange your DVD-ROM (according to the general conditions of sale).
Peripheral device driver and operating system files supplied with Windows have a Microsoft digital signature which indicates that the product has been tested for Windows compatibility.
If you receive this type of message (generally during the installation of the application), it means that the software or peripheral device has not been validated by Microsoft as Windows compatible. However, ViaMichelin assures you of the application's compatibility with both Windows 2000 and XP operating systems. Please be assured that installing the ViaMichelin programs "will not damage" your computer in any way.
If your PC does not recognise your GPS when you connect the latter, it is probable that the driver chosen by default by Windows Vista during installation is not the correct one.
